Bad results in Intermediate Video but...

I have many time lapse videos in my show, mostly from 24 to 60fps. I have been generally pleased with the quality despite WP`s compression.
However I have a night-time video clip, with lots of shadow areas, that runs at 6fps. Running the clip in Windows Media Player, the quality is good. But when I convert it to Intermediate video in WP the quality is terrible. The shadows become blocky and pixellated. The clip is unuseable using intermediate data. So instead I try to introduce it without Intermediate data (unchecking the relevant boxes under Options). But it doesn`t work. The display data is created and there are no crosses by the video in the Media Pool, but in full screen I get a distorted black and white clip in only half the screen. Can anyone, Patrick for example, give me a clue as to what to do to produce an uncompressed clip? Many thanks

Hallo Ian
The problem you are having is most probeabley the dark parts of the pictures which are hard to compress for any given Codec. Just like a Verlauf from white to blue over the screen when compressing a WMV Video. Anyway in your case I would try to make a uncompressed AVI with I Frames only in a first step. This should be Canopus HQ uncompressed or fine. This AVI should be taken into the Timeline and beeing played with no intermediate data but with the original AVI Codec. Unfortunatly this Codec will only work up To Full HD and if I am not mistaken 30 Frames per second.

Thank you Klaus. I had not heard of that codec but will look into it. I have only been using quick time pro to produce these videos and that codec is not in the list there (or at least does not appear in the Krompimierunsart list for AVI files). But I also have a trial version of After Effects so I shall see if I can use it from there.

Hallo Ian
Sorry, but you will have to buy Edius or Edius neo in Order to have this very recommendable codec available. It is available from Grassvalley.
We are always using this codec as it is using very little decompression power of the CPU. The videofiles will be very big.

When Wings starts to create the intermediate data, click the red X in the Task window to stop it. Then in the Message window, click the icon with a green tick (next to the blue ? icon) and a pop up will ask "Do you want to create the intermediate data ot play the original file?". Save after you make your choice.

Thanks for the tip, Thomas.
Interestingly - with the troublesome 6fps night clip, I got satisfactory results saving to quick time movie in quick time pro and using photo jpeg codec. The small file size meant I didn`t need to trim it further with WP`s intermediate data function.
I noted the price for Edius is not cheap, Klaus! Can it do everything After Effects can? (for example I like being able to apply Photoshop-type settings to dslr videos - especially the shadow/highlight tool).

Edius is an NLE like Premier, Fial Cut Pro, etc. After Effects is a different kettle of fish. I understand Canopus Procoder 3 comes with the HQ codec as well, so that may be more useful to you rather than a NLE software. Not cheap also. Quicktime Pro continues to serve many users well for its price.
Since you are heavy into time-lapse photographry, perhaps about the same amount is better spent on this:

Hi Thomas,
A good link, and one I go to occasionally for help on how to operate the one I possess(!) Lots of dolly movements in this video which I uploaded to youtube tonight:

My Moco time lapse fascination has kicked climbing into touch, for which my wife is happy!
